Obituary for Michael Joseph McCormick

Michael Joseph McCormick, 88, of Howell passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 18, 2019 surrounded by his family. Mr. McCormick retired in 1995 as an electrical engineer at Fort Monmouth in Eatontown. He was a dedicated union representative for government employees and worked tirelessly throughout his career to keep Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951-1953. He also was a Purple Heart recipient during the war. Mr. McCormick was a graduate of Penn State University in State College, PA with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. He enjoyed playing tennis and playing cards with his friends. He was an advocate of children’s sports and was instrumental in the development of the Harry Rash baseball field in Wall Township.
Born in Ashley, PA he lived in Pittston, PA and State College, PA before spending the last 62 years in New Jersey.
Mr. McCormick was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Anna McCormick; and by his brothers, Arthur and John McCormick.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Joan (Flynn) McCormick; son, Michael P. McCormick and his wife, Margie of Eastampton; daughters, Mary B. DeFilippis and her husband, Mario of Howell and Marianne McCormick of Wall; sister-in-law, Lucille Fox of Lincroft; 10 grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Brighid, Kevin and his wife, Shannon, Kristin, Paul, Meghan, Ryan, Kerianne, Brendan, Sarah and her husband, Arsenio and Lauren and her husband, Conrad; 4 great grandchildren, Ellie, Michael, Joey and Mariana; as well as another expectant great granddaughter on the way.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10am on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Holy Innocents RC Church, 3455 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune. Burial and Military Honors from the US Marine Corps will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery Wall. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Foundation.
