Obituary for Joseph Aloysius Tighe Jr.

Joseph Aloysius Tighe, Jr., 83, formerly of North Bergen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at his daughter’s home in Howell.

Mr. Tighe graduated from Indiana Tech. He went on to become a founding engineer at Tighe, Doty, & Carrino PA in Florham Park before retiring in 2000. He volunteered on the planning board at the Four Seasons and help bring the beautiful garden and bridge to completion. His early accomplishments include the Verrazano Bridge and World’s Fair Unisphere. His professional advise was sought by many.

He proudly served his country in the US Army Reserves.

He was a former board member at Washington Savings Bank in Hoboken and St. Mary’s Hospital in Hoboken. Mr. Tighe volunteered his time and love of faith for decades to Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in North Bergen and St. Dominic’s RC Church in Brick. He loved watching his beloved NY Yankees and playing bocce.

Born in Jersey City, he grew up in North Bergen and lived in Weehawken and Middletown before moving back to North Bergen and finally settling in Lakewood some years ago.

Mr. Tighe was predeceased by his loving wife, Josephine Tighe in 2018; daughter, Mary Catherine Tighe in 2007; and by his parents, Joseph A. Sr. and Nan Tighe.

Surviving are his sons, Joseph A. Tighe, III and his wife, Melissa of Cedar Knolls, John Tighe of New York City, Robert Tighe of Parsippany, David Tighe also of New York City and Thomas Tighe and his wife, Hannah of Malmo, Sweden; daughter, Anne Santomenna and her husband, Dr. Mark Santomenna of Howell and Patricia DeGennaro and her husband, Cosmo of Middletown; sisters, Barbara Howell of Tinton Falls, Sr. Patricia Reid of Albany, NY and Ellen Sullivan of Red Bank; grandchildren, John and his wife, Kaitlyn, Robert, Vanessa, Julia, Sara, Cosmo and Lia; and a great granddaughter, Leighton as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Visiting will be on Monday from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday 10am at St. Dominic’s RC Church, Brick. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Jersey.
