Obituary for Doris M. Hudson (Martin)
Doris M. Hudson (nee Martin), 88, of Wall, formerly of Verona, NJ, passed away on March 25, 2019. Doris was pre-deceased by her loving husband Al in 1994. She is survived by her three devoted children and their spouses: Celeste and Rich Cecchetti of Wall, Cabot and Betsy Hudson of Bent Mountain, VA, Cara and Bob Brown of Wall, her brother Albert Martin of Mantoloking, her sister Marilyn Maguire of Lincroft, and her sister-in-law Francis Martin of Brick. Doris leaves behind 5 loving grandchildren: Sean, Andrew, Charlie, Mickey, and Shannon.
Doris grew up in Bloomfield, NJ, attended Mount St. Dominic Academy, and graduated first in her class. She then went on to Caldwell College on a scholarship and later earned her Master’s degree from Montclair State while raising her young family in Verona. Doris had a love and appreciation for music and history. Her love of learning was contagious. She was a Latin and History teacher at Glen Ridge High School for 23 years. She played the piano, violin, and guitar, and frequently was a leader of song at Our Lady of the Lake, Verona.
Doris was very active in the Archdiocese of Newark during the 1970s. She was a member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and an elected member and officer of the National Bishops Advisory Council from 1975 – 1977. She was also a frequent speaker on shared responsibility and spiritual renewal around the diocese. She served on the editorial board of the Advocate for many years. Doris was an adjunct instructor at Immaculate Conception Seminary and taught courses in behavioral science and women’s studies. She was awarded a Papal Medal in 1977 for her service. After her time working in the Church, she returned to full time teaching at Glen Ridge High School from 1978 until retiring in 1995.
Doris’s most loved role was that of wife, Mom, and Grandma. She and her husband Al provided the best gift to their children, a truly inspiring example of a loving and devoted marriage. She passed on to her children the importance of family, faith, and staying close to the ones you love. May the road rise up to meet you Mom, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of Her hand.
Visiting will be Thursday, from 4-7 PM at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Funeral Mass will be Friday, 10 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea Beach Chapel, 554 E. Main St., Manasquan, NJ. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to PALS Programs, 4965 Grundy Way Doylestown, PA 18902, (palsprograms.org).
